The Church originally had 4 bells the oldest dating back to 1623 but more recently in 1997 the bells were augmented from 4 to 6 with the assistance of a grant from the Millennium Commission and a local fund raising campaign. The Treble is a new bell, which was purchased with the money from the fund and is called “the Millennium bell” and weighs 3.2 cwt. The 2nd bell was given to us by the Southwell Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers to celebrate their 50th Anniversary and weighs 4cwt. The 4 remaining bells weigh 4cwt, 5.1cwt, 6.2cwt and finally the weight of the Tenor is 8.1cwt.
Practice night for the bell ringers is on a Monday evening between 7.30pm and 9pm. As well as for regular services, the bells were rung for 9 weddings in 2003. There are often visiting ringers from other towers across the country. Recently a quarter peel lasting 45 minutes was rung for a special occasion.
BELL RINGERS CHRISTMAS BASH
On Friday 3 December the bell ringers from Calverton and their families joined other towers from across the Bingham District for their annual Christmas dinner dance at Barnstone Country Club. The evening consisted of good company, good food and good entertainment which when put together meant that all had an extremely fantastic night. A big thank you to John and Linda Rigby for their organisation of this event. We are looking forward to next year already.
